Yoshitoshi at the Asian Art Museum! (SF)

i'm really exited because today i'm going to the Asian Art Museum in SF
for their first Thursday event called Matcha...

but what i'm really looking forward to is their Yoshitoshi exhibit...
Yoshitoshi is a very famous Japanese woodblock artist from the Edo/Meiji era.

i guess it's the new mozilla..?
i have been using mozilla for a while..
because it is an alternative to internet explorer..

i am not sure why else it might be a good choice, but..
most of my geeky friends & co-workers recommend it..

Maleperduys

so, im sure most of you are familiar with Reynard the Fox, that legendary hero among our kind... but i was wondering what you guys may know about his labyrinthine castle, Maleperduys. now, as Reynard is the foxiest fox of all time (or at least the most legendary), his castle is also a very foxy place. but not much is known about it besides that it is avaliable to him whenever he needs to hide from his enemies, and that it is incredibly confusing to anyone besides Reynard. at least, thats all the information my searches have come up with.

since i have become aware of my own foxiness, ive realized that my bedroom is my Maleperduys. it is the place that is all my own, the place where i am relaxed and can let down my guard, and be creative and free to do whatever i please. i am a solitary fox, and having a secure Maleperduys is a very important thing to me. so, what about with you all? what is your Maleperduys like?

oh yeah, and also, hello everyone. im new.

it was then that the fox appeared.
"good morning" said the fox.

"good morning"
the little prince responded politely
altho when he turned around he saw nothing.

"I am right here" the voice said, "under the apple
tree."

"who are you?" asked the little prince, and added,

"You are very pretty to look at."

"I am a fox", the fox said.

"Come and play with me,"
proposed the little prince, "I am so unhappy."

"I cannot play with you," the fox said,
"I am not tamed."

"AH please excuse me,"said the little prince.
But after some thought, he added:
"what does that mean---'tame'?"

"you do not live here," said the fox,
"what is it you are looking for?"

"I am looking for men," said the little prince.
"What does that mean---tame?"

"Men,"said the fox,
"they have guns, and they hunt.
It is very disturbing.
They also raise chickens.
These are their only interests.
Are you looking for chickens?"

"No," said the little prince.
"I am looking for friends.
What does that mean---tame?"

"It is an act too often neglected,"
said the fox.
"It means to establish ties."

"To establish ties?"

"Just that," said the fox.
"to me, you are still nothing more than
a little boy who is just like
a hundred thousand other little boys.
And I have no need of you.
And you, on your part, have no need of me.

"I hunt chickens; men hunt me.
All chickens are just alike,
and all the men are just alike.
And in consequence, I am a little bored.
But if you tame me,
it will be as if the sun came to shine on my life.
I shall know the sound of a step that will be
different from all the others.
Other steps send me hurrying back
underneath the ground.
Yours will call me, like music out of my burrow.
And then look:
you see the grain-fields down yonder?
I do not eat bread.
Wheat is of no use to me.
The wheat fields have nothing to say to me.
And that is sad.
But you have hair that is the color of gold.
Think how wonderful that will be
when you have tamed me!
The grain, which is also golden,
will bring me back the thought of you.
And I shall love to listen
to the wind in the wheat. . ."

The fox gazed at the little prince,
for a long time.
"Please---tame me!" he said.

"I want to, very much," the little prince replied.
"But I have not much time.
I have friends to discover,
and a great many things to understand."

"One only understands the things that one tames,"
said the fox.
" Men have no more time to understand anything.
They buy things all ready made at the shops.
But there is no shop anywhere
where one can buy friendship,
and so men have no friends any more.
If you want a friend, tame me. . ."

"What must I do, to tame you?
asked the little prince.

"You must be very patient," replied the fox.
First you will sit down
at a little distance from me
-like that-in the grass.
I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye,
and you will say nothing.
Words are the source of misunderstandings.
But you will sit a little closer to me,
every day..."

The next day the little prince came back.

"It would have been better to come back
at the same hour," said the fox.
"If for example, you came at four o'clock
in the afternoon,
then at three o'clock I shall begin to be happy.
I shall feel happier and happier
as the hour advances.
At four o'clock,
I shall be worrying and jumping about.
I shall show you how happy I am!
But if you come at just any time,
I shall never know at what hour
my heart is ready to greet you. . .
One must observe the proper rites. . ."

"What is a rite?" asked the little prince.

"Those also are actions too often neglected,"
said the fox.
"they are what make one day
different from other days,
one hour different from other hours.
There is a rite, for example, among my hunters.
Every Thursday they danse with the village girls.
So Thursday is a wonderful day for me!
I can take a walk as far as the vineyards.
But if the hunters danced at just any time,
every day would be like
every other day,
and I should never have any vacation at all."

So the little prince tamed the fox.
And when the hour of his departure drew near---

"Ah," said the fox, "I shall cry."

"It is your own fault," said the little prince.
"I never wished you any sort of harm;
but you wanted me to tame you. . ."

"Yes that is so", said the fox.

"But now you are going to cry!"
said the little prince.

"Yes that is so" said the fox.

"Then it has done you no good at all!"

"It has done me good," said the fox,
"because of the color of the wheat fields."
And then he added:
"go and look again at the roses.
You will understand now
that yours is unique in all the world.
Then come back to say goodbye to me,
and I will make you a present of a secret."

The little prince went away,
to look again at the roses.
"You are not at all like my rose," he said.

No one has tamed you, and you have tamed no one.

Bruce Campbell- Fox Friend?

So I'm lounging in a hot bubble bath reading Bruce Campbell's autobiography <i>If Chins Could Kill</i>, and in it he talks about bike rides he used to take while he was filming Army of Darkness.

He says one time he stopped on a dirt road in the middle of a light forest. Across the street is a creature he doesn't quite identify, but after staring at it for a second, realizes it's a red fox. He figured it would skitter away, but instead it marched up to him and started chewing on his bike tire!

After a moment of this the fox regards him, and Bruce decides to drop his baseball cap on the ground. The fox picks it up, runs a few feet away, shakes it like a playful dog might, and looks back at Bruce after dropping it on the road. He follows and picks it up again, does the same thing, and the fox runs into the woods with it! Bruce follows again, this time hangs the hat on a low branch, and the fox nips it down from the branch.

After the fox tries to mark the hat as his territory, Bruce shoos him off. But the fox is not deterred! Instead of running away, he stretches out in the grass. Bruce decides to try the same thing, and stretches out in the grass nearby. He says they stayed there for a few minutes, then the fox ran off. Of course few people believed him when he got back to the studio.

If it were any other kind of animal I might not have believed him either- but what an amazing story of a fox encounter! I've paraphrased and likely messed up a couple details, but that's the gist! And just as a side note, the book is outstanding. I don't even care about Bruce Campbell or his movies, but the book was in my house so I picked it up. The fox anecdote is just one of many amusing stories. :)

I saw Foxes

Just posting a recent fox sighting. I was driving home on the last day of a teaching assignment when I looked up from fiddling with my ipod to see three reddish-brown shapes next to the road. My first thought was "those are some awfully small deer", followed closely by "FOXES!" It was a vixen (I believe) and her two small kits. The first kit disappeared quickly into the overgrown field, but the vixen stood protectively watching as the second kit took of at an excited run along the side of the road (I believe there was a bird involved).

They were beautiful and seemed so full of enthusiasm and curiosity. And I was close enough that I could see the black tips of their ears and paws even as I sped past at 60mph (I was so astonished that it didn't occur to me to slow down until I was past them). It was a wonderful end to a year of long commutes.

Dakini-Ten was originally an Ancient Indian goddess Daakinii, one of the handmaidens of dark goddess Kali. She was always asociated with foxes - and so after arriving to Japan via China, the worship of Dakini-Ten, got fused with existing fox-spirit (妖狐・狐蠱) worship. Use of 'Dakiniten-pou' is based on summonning and commanding 'koko' (狐蠱), the fox spirits who are said to possess strong powers over the minds of the humans. The sheer potency of 'dakiniten-pou' always made it a feared practice. Throughout the history, those in power would try to outlaw it as a black art, so as to ensure it remains exclusively in their own use. Indeed, Touji sect of Shingon buddhism has adopted 'dakiniten-pou' as a secret art which safeguards the well-being of the royal dynasty….

domestic fox

i watched in discovery channel once about domesticated fox, i dont know the exact genus, but it's pretty cute. but the researcher observed that their fur ctend to mutate to of a slight white streak to grey patches on the tamed foxes. anyone know of this?

My friend lives in Kyoto and writes a blog. He posted some pics of an inari shrine near his house. One of the pics was of a carving in the face of one of the buildings, a strange abstract shape.

As soon as I saw it I knew I would have it tattooed on me. I did some research. There are about 40,000 fox shrines in Japan, and the temple in my friend's pics - the Fushimi Inari shrine is the most elaborate and famous.

The abstract insignia represents Inari's "wishing jewel", a flaming jewel often seen in the mouth of a fox that gives it it's supernatural powers.
